Navigating Social Media as a Christian Woman

Hi gals,

There is just so much to talk about when it comes to media in our world. I was off social media from 18 to 21 years old because, going into adulthood, I found myself struggling with identity and what I wanted my life to look like. So, I was comparing myself to these beautiful, established women. As girls, we are already comparing ourselves to others and trying to see if we are better than someone else, especially if you are not saved and are lost. I just think as a community we have to be careful about what we consume and limit ourselves to certain accounts or types of content.

What I have noticed is that media normalizes things that should not be normal, and it causes children to grow up too quickly by taking away their innocence. At the same time, though, it can be a helpful tool for building community and providing helpful tips or teaching valuable educational topics. I am not saying social media is a bad thing; it’s just very vast.

I love watching homemakers on YouTube, food videos, and recipes, or hairstyles on Pinterest, but it’s important I don’t compare myself to those women. I am younger, and I don’t have a lot of money; I live in an expensive state, and God just doesn’t want me in those same circumstances right now. I have to say, after devoting my life to Christ, my way of looking at media has changed drastically, and now that I am reintroducing social media to my life, I am going about it in a different way.

I went to cosmetology school, trying to get back on Instagram, thinking that was my way to talk to women and help them see God’s goodness, but I realized that putting myself out there just for looks and views to make money and get clicks on my salon is not what I wanted for my life. I still love to do hair, but I do it just to help out my family here and there, and it is not for the money or views.

My goal is to create a safe space for women to build community, grow in faith, and ask questions. My questions to you are:

How do you think media has affected your life?

How do you use media now?

What would you like to see from this blog?

Thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely day ❤️✝️

Having grown up during the start of Facebook, I remember there being elementary and middle school kids who would lie about their age in order to get an account. By the time I finally turned 13, I already felt behind with the whole social media thing. I also decided to get a Tumblr, which was such a horrible idea. There is so much rot on that website lol I would go through pashes where hated it and didn’t touch it due to feeling inferior since my posts were not getting the attention the popular crowd was. Social media definitely forces you into the comparing game.

I stepped away semi-permanently several years ago and now only use Facebook for family and church things. I only use Instagram for crochet patterns, and I do not use X or anything else really. It is hard for me to count blogging as social media, since I do not feel the need to put on some sort of mask here. You either like what I have to say, or you don’t lol Maybe that is me growing up, or maybe this environment is much more open to people being themselves?

I definitely do not expect anything from anyone else’s blog since it should be a place for you mainly. It would be cool to have a place for like-minded women so that I love 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing and for your support. I agree with you, I think blogging is different than a lot of other social media platforms and it can be personalized.
